I've said it to a lot of my friends and family that this Coronovirus pandemic is like living in a nightmare, or an episode of Black Mirror. I am just waiting for this terrible episode to end. If you have been following me for a while, you'll know that I was diagnosed with anxiety about 3 years ago. Since then I have learned do understand my triggers and learned ways to deal with it in trying times. I am in no way cured, but I know how to deal with it. In this time of uncertainty, I wanted to help those who are suffering and need some advice and practical tools of the best way to deal with anxiety in a crisis.


THE BEST WAYS TO DEAL WITH STRESS AND ANXIETY IN A CRISIS



  1. STOP AND BREATHE

Sounds simple right? Well, not when you are feeling very anxious or even going through a panic attack. The best way to deal with this is to find a quiet spot, put one hand on your chest, and breathe in and out. Concentrate on your breathing for 30 secs and you should be fine. It is very effective to do and I swear by it. Use the diagram below as a guide.



2. LIMIT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA

A bit hypocritical for someone who works in the field, but honestly it all gets too much. However, we can control what we take in, on Instagram I mute or unfollow accounts that are negative, and on Twitter I mute keywords so I can have a stress free feed. When things are outside your control, it is so important to protect your mental space. Try and fill what you're viewing with positivity and you'll see that you won't be so stressed as you would be if you allowed negativity to fill your space.



3. EXPRESS YOURSELF

You need to talk to people about your stress and anxiety. Knowing that there are people that you trust does wonders. I first like to assess if my friends and family are in a mental capacity to listen because everyone has good days and bad days. Then we both just say hey permission to vent? Then let loose! Alternatively, you can just write things down in your phone or a physical diary. I find apps like Youper are great for this.


4. TAKE UP A NEW HOBBY OR SKILL

Let's be honest we have nothing but time, so you could use this time to distract yourself and learn a new hobby or take up a new skill. I wanna stress not to be too hard on yourself if you cannot do all the things you aspire to do, it takes time and we all have other priorities. Just take it easy, it is supposed to be fun.




5. EXERCISE

I am exercise shy, but I started to get into it last year, after gaining some weight and wanting to lose weight in preparation for the now-defunct Afronation, Puerto Rico. We move sha! I have been a bit behind with gyms being closed, but luckily there are loads of home work out channels you can follow and you can buy the equipment to go at your own pace. I prefer dancing, to be honest, and subscribed to this program called Steezy, which is dope. I also like lifting weights. I forgot to add that healthy eating plus exercise makes you feel better.
